Incidentally, your original calculation shows the danger of rounding intermediate values:

So we have a 1.44% chance of that happening. 1.44796
Gives us 1.18% for that second scenario. 1.15837
So 2.62% of my having 15 and the dealer showing a 10 or face card. 2.60633

How do you do a quick monte carlo simulation? Is there a software specific for that? I often want to run one but writing the program usually discourages me.

A quick Monte Carlo simulation agrees with ~2.61%

I get 2.61%.

960 possibilities if your first card is a five (4 x 16 x 15)
960 possibilities if your first card is worth ten (16 x 4 x 15)
6 x 256 possibilities if your first card is A, 4, 6-9 (4 x 4 x 16)
= 3456 out of a total of (52 x 51 x 50) or 132,600 possibilities
= 2.61%

I think an infinite # of decks would change that to 2.54%, since the dealers third card would not be affected by your ten, and the number of possibilities would be 52 x 52 x 52 since cards aren’t used up.

Question: Math and Odds and Blackjack

What are the chances, in blackjack, that I will start with 15, and the dealer will be showing a 10 (or face card worth 10)?

Despite the fact that my buddy thinks the odds of this are near 100%, I’ve tried to calculate the actual odds (assuming a single deck).

I’ve come up with 2.62% -ish. Not really sure if I’m right.

I started with all the possible hands I could have.
2652 (52 * 51)

Then I figured out how many hands would give me 15.

64 hands with a 10 (or equivalent) and a 5.
64 hands with a 5 and a 10.
16 hands with a 9 and a 6.
16 hands with a 6 and a 9.
16 hands with an 8 and a 7.
16 hands with a 7 and an 8.
16 hands with an ace and a 4.
16 hands with a 4 and an ace.

These fall into two groups, those that have a 10, and therefore deprive the dealer of one, and those that don’t.

128 hands have a 10.
96 hands are 15 some other way.

If I have a 10, she has 15 cards left, out of 50, to get a 10.
If I don’t she has 16 out of 50.

So my odds of making a 15 using a 10 (or face card) are 4.8%.
Her odds of then having a 10 showing are 30%.

So we have a 1.44% chance of that happening.

-Plus-

Me making 15 some other way: 3.7%.
And her having a 10 showing: 32%.

Gives us 1.18% for that second scenario.

So 2.62% of my having 15 and the dealer showing a 10 or face card.

Two questions.
Assuming a single deck, is this correct?
Assuming multiple decks, what changes (if anything)?

If I’m wrong, where did I go wrong? (It would help my brain to have a combination of english and math to explain where I went wrong, rather than just something like “you should have used a factorial for possible hands 52!-4!”, etc…)

Thanks.

Play Games-craps

November 6th, 2008

Start to play games of craps and you will understand why I believe it is a great game to play. Craps gives you the best odds of winning in a casino, besides poker. Not only does craps give you the best shot of winning it also lets you reduce the casino’s edge significantly. Craps is a great way to win big money in a short period. Yes you can use slot machines but the odds are so stacked against you it is not even worth it. In blackjack the dealers reshuffle the decks frequently so you cannot really count cards. In roulette the odds are completely in the casino’s favor. Play games of craps at casinos and you will have a good shot of walking out with a win.

The key to playing craps is having discipline. Craps is a game of streaks. You must learn to load up on the hot streaks and survive the cold streaks. With craps you are looking for the hot hand. Once you find the hot hand or streak it is time to place larger amounts of money. There are many different strategies for determining streaks. Find a strategy that works best for you and use it.

You should keep notes on each time you play and track your performance. Remember craps is a game of streaks and chasing your bets will most likely result in more losses. A win is a win period, even if you only walked away with 20 bucks.

A couple of bets you should stay away from are “hardaways”, “elevens”, and “any craps”. These bets are stacked against you. These bets are sucker bets used by the casinos for players who do not know any better. Hardaways are numbers that can made in pairs. For instance, 4,6,8 and 10. You win if the dice hit your numbers in a pair. For instance 2-2 for the 4 or 5-5 for the 10 and so on. You win with “elevens” when the dice roll an 11, if it rolls anything else you lose. With “any craps” you win when the dice roll craps: 2,3 or 12. You lose if the dice hit any other number.

Playing craps is a great way to win at casinos and is actually a very simple game to learn. Many people get intimidated because of the large crap tables with all of the numbers on them. Do not let this discourage you. Play games of craps online for free to get a better understanding of the game.

Michigan Indian Casino Without Gambling

November 4th, 2008

The new Indian casino, the $36 million Kewadin Shores Casino and Hotel is sitting on a beautiful location on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is located north of the Macinac Bridge overlooking Lake Huron’s Horseshoe Bay. The hotel-casino complex belongs to the Chippewa Indian tribe which has five other casinos. There are eight hundred slot machines and twenty-six game tables in the 29,000 square foot casino. The hotel opened last June, but the casino didn’t. The problem is gambling is illegal on the land the casino is located on. And because gambling isn’t legal on the land, the casino sits idle.

Needless to say the Chippewa Nation leadership is a little angry about the situation and pointing fingers at each other over who is responsible for the $36 million blunder. The tribe’s former chairman and present chairman blame each other. Only thirty feet of the hotel’s present casino is on land where gambling is illegal. The former chairman knew this when the building was in progress, but the foundation had already been laid. Even though a second survey indicated this fact, the tribe did not change their plans and continued to build the casino. The tribe’s lawyer blames the National Indian Gaming Commission for not ruling on the issue. If the tribe thought the government would give in and allow the casino after the hotel and casino were finished, they were wrong. The result is that the tribe is building another casino near there for a cost of $2.5 million.
